Hi Everyone!

John Clark BMW Championships - 2nd/3rd February, 2008

It is with regret that the above Championships have had to be cancelled on the above dates, due to the lack of entrants. Aberdeen Ski Club however, will look into the prospect of perhaps holding these later in the Season, provided the snow holds at Glenshee. We will keep you notified.

Thanks to all the 14 Entries we did receive and Good Luck to you all for the Season. Letters are in the post with return of your Cheques, etc.

Katie Barnett, Chairman.

MEMBERSHIP:

Your Membership for the Club is now due for renewal, please complete an Application Form for Membership and return it to Katie Barnett, at your earliest convenience, when your new Membership cards will be sent to you.

Some of you may find that we have included you in our list for the Newsletter even though you did not renew your Membership last year. This may have been an over-sight on your behalf and we are giving you another chance to re-join, your support for the club is most important, even though the snow conditions for the past few years have not been up to much, and as such the Club has been unable to ensure that our Members have had a full winter programme. But remember - you have to take the good with the bad and Clubs still require your support. Clubs require to survive so that Ski-ing in Scotland still haave a prominent say in what is going on in the Sport.

LIFE MEMBERS AND THOSE PAYING THEIR MEMBERSHIP BY STANDING ORDER, WILL FIND THEIR MEMBERSHIP CARDS IN THE POST.

GARTHDEE SKI SLOPE:

I presume that you have read recently in the Press the state of this facility – yes – it is closed again for repairs!! We were hoping to run classes on Thursday evenings for beginners and others, but this has had to be put on the back burner until we can get confirmation that the Club can book and use the slope. Here’s hoping that when these repairs are completed that the slope will be in first class condition to be used and we can get back to what ski-ing on a Thursday evening used to be in the old days. Meantime however the Nursery Slope has been repaired and is now up and running and I understand that Classes are being held on them by the City.

As soon as we hear about the re-opening of the slope, we will advise you on the details of our sessions – classes and of course, use by our Members for recreation only. …………. So watch this space!!

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS:

One of the highlights of Aberdeen Ski Clubs 50th Anniversary, was a Civic Reception which was held in the Aberdeen Town House, hosted by Cllr. Ron Clark in the absence of the Lord Provost. A great evening was enjoyed by some 60 invited Members and Guests … the age groups stretching from Founder Members … to some of the young Racers of today.

ABERDEEN SPORTS COUNCIL:

Aberdeen Sports Council are 21 years old this year, and they have created the inaugural Aberdeen Sporting Hall of Fame which is being supported by the City Council and Aberdeen Journals. Aberdeen Ski Club are Members of this Sports Council and we are delighted to announce that one of our Members has been recognised for her achievement in her Sport.

Anne Robb Boyle – is a former British and Scottish Champion which allowed her to represent her Country in two Olympic Games in Austria and USA. She was the first Aberdeen skier to reach this high accolade.

Congratulations Anne, in having the honour of being chosen for this "Hall of Fame" which Aberdeen Sports Council hope will encourage future sportsmen and women to reach their goal in their particular sport.

The "Hall of Fame" will be having a special place in the new Linksfield Stadium once it has been revamped so that everyone can view it.

RACING RESULTS:

Congratulations to Claire Robb, Laura Wood, Sarah Wood, Mairi Crawford, Jemima Barnes, Campbell Beaton, Chris Thomson, and Euan McGhee – all now ski-ing for their respective Universities – you all had great results at the British University Races earlier in the year – keep up the good work – let us know, how you are progressing.

Racing in Scotland may have taken a back seat, but it is great to see that trainees of Aberdeen Ski Club can excel abroad.

GLENSHEE PERFORMANCE SNOWSPORTS SQUAD – 2006/07

WHO WE ARE

Glenshee Performance Snowsports is an initiative organised by Aberdeen Ski Club, Blairgowrie Ski Club and Braemar Ski Club in association with Glenshee Ski Centre.

The training is envisaged as a more "back to basics" program than the full on Race Training of previous years. The program is open to members of any Ski Club, which is affiliated to Snowsport Scotland. Applicants should be able to use the lifts, and have a desire to ski fast while under control.

OUR AIM

The principle aim of the program is to take young skiers to a level past Ski School. For first season applicants it is seen as a stepping stone towards competitive ski racing or freestyle skiing. Alternatively it could provide a youngster with an early route towards becoming a ski instructor. At the same time, the trainees will gain pleasure from the benefits of participating in outdoor physical exercise and have great fun in the mountains.

For the more experienced skiers (intermediate level and beyond), the masters training offers skiers over the age of 30 the chance to receive instruction aimed at aiding performance, race training and touring.

2006/07 TRAINING PROGRAM

The training program will be run in blocks of four weekends with the option of either Saturday only, Sunday only or both days. The four weekend blocks are intended to give some flexibility in the event of poor snow conditions or bad weather. Once a four weekend block has been successfully completed then a second and hopefully a third will be organised.

½ day sessions on both Sat and/or Sun will be available for complete beginners only.

Masters training is available as half day sessions on Saturdays.

The first block will start on 13th/14th January 2007 and will finish once four weekends have been completed.

GROUPS

The groups will be loosely based around the racing age categories as follows:

  1. Juniors (born 1991 or earlier)
  2. Children (born 1992 to 1995)
  3. Bairns (born 1995 or later)

Trainees will be placed in a group of similar ability, so there may be some crossing of the age groups to ensure the best balance for the group and most appropriate training for the individual.

COACHES

Coaches in the more experienced groups will hold Scottish Alpine Performance Coach Qualifications, or be widely experienced in both racing and coaching. We may employ some ex-racers who are intending to undertake coaching qualifications later in the year, to assist our qualified coaches. Our coaches include several ex-British and Scottish Team members.

Coaches in the less experienced groups will be highly qualified Ski/Snowboard Instructors which enables us to provide a consistently high standard of coaching for all abilities of trainees.

RACING

Competing in races is not compulsory. We do however expect our more experienced trainees to compete during the season.

For Children, the main race at Glenshee will be the John Clark BMW and East of Scotland Children’s Race.

More experienced Juniors and Children who have been on our alpine camps will normally attend the major races at other Scottish Ski Centres. Your coach will keep you right as to which races you should enter.

Bairns will normally have a race at Glenshee, a race at the Lecht and probably finish at the end of the season with the Bairns Bucket and Lassies Cup at Cairngorm.

REGISTRATION FOR BASS SEED POINTS

Children and Juniors intending to race will need to register for Seed points with Snowsport Scotland (formally SNSC). For a registration form and information, please contact Snowsport Scotland on 0131 4454151 or download the form from the website at www.snowsportscotland.org. Another valuable source of information is www.britski.org and its links. Bairns do not have to register as their races are run on a much more informal basis with entries accepted on the day.

PRIORITY

The new management at the Glenshee Chairlift Company are less enthusiastic about the "one trainee – one member of the public" policy which has operated for many years on the Cairnwell tow. This is understandable as they must keep the general skiing public happy if the Chairlift Company is to survive. The continuation of skiing at Glenshee is surely in all our interests.

We are however, working in close conjunction with the management and they assure us that they will do all they can for our trainees. The priority may not always be on the Cairnwell tow and it may not be available at peak times. All trainees should wear their GPS bib which will be issued at the beginning of the season, at all times as they allow the lift attendant and the general public to identify who has priority. The bibs will be withdrawn from trainees who misbehave or abuse the system.

INSURANCE

As a member of a Ski Club affiliated to Snowsport Scotland you are covered for third party risk only. Trainees or parents wishing any additional cover should make their own arrangements.

SAFETY

All children participating in this training program must wear safety helmets. No helmet – No training or racing. Our coaches all have training in First Aid and are in radio contact with each other. They can very quickly summon additional help from ski patrollers.

COST

Training Cost per Session Cost
Both Days (Sat & Sun) £20.00 £160.00
Single Day (Sat or Sun) £20.00 £80.00
Beginners (4 x ½ days) £15.00 £60.00
Masters (4 x ½ days) £15.00 £60.00

APPLICATIONS

Please return the enclosed form with your cheque made payable to ABERDEEN, BLAIRGOWRIE OR BRAEMAR SKI CLUB, to your club representative’s address below.

If there is insufficient snow for skiing the training will be postponed to the next weekend when skiing is possible, and so on, until four successful weekends have been completed.

Unfortunately, no refunds can be given if you miss days or if we go up to the Ski Centre but are stormbound.

AND FINALLY

Please remember that the Glenshee Performance Snowsports Program is organised by parents on a voluntary basis. We desperately need a new group of younger parents to become involved in the organisation at Glenshee to help develop our future skiers and ensure a smooth transition throughout the seasons.
